Connell F. Smith

1914-1988

Connell F. Smith served as Business Manager/Secretary Treasurer of Laborers’ Local 773 from 1942 to 1976. It was his vision that guides Local 773 to this day in organizing, political action, and service to the membership. He provided a strong foundation for one of the most respected Local Unions in the entire International Union. His philosophy of “Who can I help today” guided him as the longest serving business manager in Local 773 history.

To benefit the Connell F. Smith-Homer Brown Scholarship Fund

Laborers’ Local 773 is proud to host the  Edward M. Smith Memorial Golf Tournament to benefit the Connell F. Smith-Homer Brown Scholarship fund which will be held at Kokopelli Golf Club in Marion, IL on June 27th, 2024.

The Edward M. Smith Golf Tournament is one of the most well-known tournaments in Southern Illinois. The tournament kicks off with a welcoming reception with food and beverages on Wednesday evening which is attended by friends, colleagues, dignitaries and supporters of Laborers’ Local 773. On Thursday, golfers will have the opportunity to enjoy a day on the green with free beverages all day, an early breakfast as well as a lunch & dinner provided to all participants. The day will wrap up with an abundant amount of prizes, souvenirs and gifts including cash prizes for winning teams.

The Annual Golf Tournament is the organizations main source of funding for the Connell F. Smith-Homer Brown Scholarship Fund. which was established in 1986 to provide members and their families the opportunity to improve their lives by assisting them with the opportunity to further their education and obtain a college degree. For the past 37 years Local 773 has awarded hundreds scholarships to deserving college students who otherwise would not have the opportunity to receive a college degree.

The Connell F. Smith-Homer Brown Scholarship Fund is a tax-exempt Charitable 501(c)3 foundation with the IRS.
